Clean Install
Unfortunately doing the upgrades manually has broken a couple of things elsewhere, so I will probably go to 9.2 just to get a clean install of X.Org... Saying that, I think the main server will probably stay on 9.1 for a while until 9.2 is tested and stable on the other machines, then I'll swap the workload (and

upgrading from XP-Home to XP-Pro: Worth the trip?

will add one twist, and that is a clean install has lead to a better setup than the upgrade does. Win95 regardless of version carries a lot of baggage. Since Win98 gets many of its settings from the original Win95 install why add to the burden. A clean install has resulted in a very smooth and stable

Upgrade Vista Home Premium to Ultimate ? fix corrupted files
I helped a friend make the upgrade (though a CLEAN INSTALL is really a better idea), and had to hunt down a lot of replacement drivers. The actual upgrade went well, until the supposedly WinXP compliant scanner driver managed to torpedo the SCSI driver and make the system bluescreen at startup! - STOP ERROR.

Tech says do it all again, and if that doesn't work, go back to vendor and ask for a clean install. If anyone has any words of wisdom here, I'd appreciate it. Whereas I would agree the upgrade path is more "convenient" in my view it is worth suffering the "inconvenience" of a "clean" install. Question 3 - how, exactly, do I "wipe" the machine to get it ready for the clean install? I have installed ME over W98. I have inconsistent problems, the most regular one being that the computer will not automatically shutdown, and instead indicates an error when I tell it to shutdown, of course then requiring scandisk to run at startup. My question is... Is it worth it to do a clean install?

I found that it works better when you do a format and a clean install when going from 1 major release (8.x) level to another (9.x). Their problems disappeared when they formated and had a clean install. Some applications worked better when you deleted their .app_nam_erc and recreate it fresh.
